The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
