No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
